Social Networking: Privacy Becomes Public

I will be writing an analysis on social networks' shift from private to public. In this paper I will focus on how social networks were first developed for people to stay connected and interact with one another. However, as it has evolved and become increasingly popular it has transformed into a dangerous place where personal information has become too easily accessible. Some of the major issues I will focus on is how it has had a negative impact on the younger generations, the way in which social networking has impacted company recruitment and how the government has used it to follow our every move. I wish to analyze the ways in which social networks give a false impression of security while providing the public a looking glass into the private lives of individuals.

What is new media?

New Media technologies are referred to as Web 2.0. According to The New Media Technologies: Overview and Research Framework by Linda Weiser Friedman and Hershey H. Friedman Web 2.0 consists of blogs, wiki's, online social networking, virtual worlds and other form of social media that is a part of web-related communication technologies.
The Internet then becomes and essential, integrated part, of new media. Without Internet there is no line of web-relation communication and therefore the existence of new media ceases to exist. Therefore, the Internet becomes the bridge between Web 2.0 communication.
New media is changing simply because there is a shift in use of communication through the Internet. New media may seem a though it is replacing old media but it is actually rapidly evolving to enhance it. For example, in the article Celebrity Blogs: The Impact of New Media by Melissa Gerry on www.associatedcontent.com, it stated that "In the past, a show like Access Hollywood often had these stories [celebrity news] and pictures before anyone, more than typically, magazines like People. There's been a change in the marketplace and some older media outlets seethe shift as opportunities as blogs can generate buss earlier in the day and Access Hollywood can delve into the story that evening." This is a prime example of how new media is blending in with old media. Both are sources of information, however, in the past society as only been accustomed to primary news sources driven by business and profit. New media offers us a newer perspective coming from individuals within a given community.

New Day

I never thought I would actually start my own blog. But now that I have I feel very excited to see what I can say that would stimulate interesting and intelligent response. I look forward to joining the many who have utilized the Internet to the fullest by leaving their own imprint in this world through the World Wide Web.
